Weighing the Benefits of Partial vs. Full Dentures

If you have suffered from tooth loss due to extraction, decay, or trauma, we can help. We help patients understand the difference between two common types of dentures: partial vs. full dentures.

Dentures to Fit Your Smile

When you think of dentures, do you picture oversized, slipping plastic plates? It is time to think again; this treatment has improved dramatically over the years to offer patients a more natural, secure option for teeth replacement. Dentures do more than just improve the aesthetics of the teeth; they restore chewing and speaking function as well. For patients with partial or complete teeth loss, regaining a full smile is possible with dentures. Though implant-supported dentures offer great stability we also offer two common, removable denture options: partials and full dentures.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures, often referred to as just “partials”, are removable tooth replacement appliances. To qualify for partial dentures, patients must have at least one or more remaining teeth on the top and bottom jaws.

Partials are a good tooth replacement option for patients who have sporadically missing teeth. The artificial teeth and pink acrylic plate are supported by connectors that attach to the adjacent teeth for stability.

The Benefits of Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are best for patients that have several missing teeth, but still have a few healthy teeth remaining. They are also more appealing for patients who want a removable appliance.

Full Dentures

Traditional full, or complete dentures are constructed from a tissue-colored acrylic plate that fits comfortably over the surface of the top and bottom gums. The artificial teeth are firmly attached to each plate to mimic a natural row of teeth and produce a natural-looking smile once in place. Suction or dental adhesives can hold dentures in place during daily use. Most patients find they can eat and drink normally with complete dentures, while simply avoiding certain crunchy, tough, or sticky foods.

The Benefits of Full Dentures

Full dentures are the best solution for patients who require full teeth replacement. They are also ideal for those that do not qualify for implant-supported restorations due to a lack of bone density or strength. Full dentures typically last five to 10 years, and restore much of a patient’s eating and chewing abilities. In addition to chewing function, full dentures allow patients to speak clearly and can offer renewed confidence after suffering teeth loss. As another benefit, full dentures can easily be removed at the end of the day, or after meals, for deep cleaning.
