Common Denture Myths

DON’T LET THESE DENTURE MYTHS FOOL YOU

MYTH 1: YOUR DENTURES WILL LAST FOREVER

While it would be great if dentures could be made to last forever, that is simply not in the cards. A lot of time and energy has been put into increasing the lifespan of dentures, unfortunately, there is only so much that modern denture manufacturing can accomplish. Because dentures are made from either acrylic, they are just as likely to chip and break as normal teeth if they are not properly cared for. Even if a person does everything right and takes great pains to make sure that their dentures are properly maintained, over time dentures can lose their natural appearance and chewing ability.

MYTH 2: DENTURES ARE OBVIOUS

One of the most common concerns that are patients express in relation to dentures, is the idea that people will be able to tell that they are wearing dentures. While we understand this concern, in our opinion it is not something that most people should worry about. Modern dentures look very natural and, in many cases, mimic a person’s natural teeth very accurately. If you have noticed that your dentures are clicking, slipping, or are forming unnatural stains, it could be a result of an improper fitting or less than optimal home care. If you have properly fitted dentures and take the appropriate steps to care for them, it should be difficult to be able to tell you are wearing dentures unless you let them in on the secret.

MYTH 3: DENTURES MAKE IT HARDER TO EAT

This is one of those myths that seems to have been propagated by the media. Nearly everyone has watched a scene in a television show or movie where someone is struggling to eat with dentures in. Most often, these scenes depict the dentures slipping while a person tries to chew or, in some cases, the dentures falling out altogether. If you notice that your dentures are slipping while you are eating or that they are causing any pain you should give us a call so that we can make sure your dentures are properly fitted.
