New Dentures: What to expect

Where do I start if I think I need dentures?

The best starting point for determining whether or not you need dentures is to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our Denturist's.

How much do dentures cost?

Denture fees can vary based on the type of prothesis being constructed. We offer a variety of payment options.

What kind of dentures are there?

Our dentures can replace some or all of your missing teeth. The dentures that replace all of the teeth are referred to as ‘complete dentures‘ and they rest on your gums, which cover the jawbone. Attaching these dentures to dental implants can improve the stability and make a major impact on the retention of the denture. Dentures that replace a few teeth, but not all of the teeth, are known as ‘partial dentures‘.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

Yes! Many of our patients wear their dentures at night but we typically recommend that you take them out when you sleep in order to give your gums a chance to rest. If you sleep in your dentures, we recommend taking them out at least once a day so that you can perform proper oral hygiene (brushing of the gums and tongue) and cleanse the dentures. If you don’t sleep in your dentures, we recommend that you place them in a commercial cleaner or water during the evening.

Will it be painful?

It’s normal to experience minor irritation when you’re getting fitted for dentures. That irritation should disappear as your mouth becomes accustomed to them. We like to use the analogy of a boot – if you were to break in new boots it would take a few weeks or even months to build up calluses. Dentures are no different. Similarly, if you’ve had teeth removed prior to placement of your dentures the discomfort may last for several weeks and sometimes even months. The MAJOR KEY to success is to be patient with the process and try not to get discouraged. Regular adjustments to the dentures during the healing process are often necessary.

Can I eat normally?

You will need to learn how to eat all over again with new dentures, and it takes a little time to get used to them. After a while, however, you should be able to eat the foods you love. Difficult rigid or sticky foods may always be slightly difficult to chew.

How do I care for my new dentures?

Since dentures are made from acrylic, it is unfortunately not possible to whiten dentures like natural teeth. To keep the amount of staining to a minimum, we recommend that you clean the dentures with a soft denture brush daily to remove food, plaque, and bacteria. Avoid brushing your dentures with a normal tooth paste. Tooth pastes are designed to be used only on natural teeth and contain chemicals and materials that can harm the dentures.
